St. Aidan's Got Talent 2011
St. Aidan’s Got Talent is the latest show to have been produced from the talented students in St. Aidan’s Comprehensive.
Last Wednesday 23rd November, saw 13 acts including solo singers, Irish dancers, hip-hop dancers, duets, a comedy act and a pianist take to the stage of St. Aidan’s. For the first time in a school show, the MC’s for the night were two students. Rory Traynor and Jason Taylor, both 6th year students took the role. This show came after weeks of hard preparations by all the acts, by the organising members and of course the show would never have happened without Ms Siobhán Maguire, the school’s music teacher, who put a lot of her time these past few weeks into helping each act individually and to organise the night also!
The show kicked off with a Dermott O’Leary style entrance form the MC’s after Mr. Andrew Mayne welcomed them to the stage. With the X-Factor judges theme tune blasting, Rory and Jason entered from the back of the hall saluting the crowd to set the atmosphere.
The talented acts included songs from various popstars in the charts today. Last year’s winner, Alison Conlon, graced the stage to a warm welcome firstly, setting the bar high with a beautiful rendition of Katy Perry’s hit, “The One That Got Away”.Olivia Forde delivered a lovely rendition of Bruno Mars's song 'Marry You' accompanied by her excellent backing dancers. Usher’s songs were an inspiration for the night with Brandon Lynch giving a super energised freestyle dance routine to the song “More”, and Nicola Reilly along with her two dancers, Nicole Igoe and Elaine Brady gave the show a brilliant closing performance with the song “Without You”. Nicola also managed to get some promotion of her Dog Grooming business, Scruffy-2-Fluffy! Jason Nulty proved a crowd pleaser, performing a comedy act under his stage name ‘Jake The Peg’. Jillian Jordan blew everyone away with a stunning cover of Lady Gaga’s hit “The Edge Of Glory”, whilst giving it a unique twist playing the piano. Claire Conlon and Jessica Mills said “Hello” to the crowd with Martin Solveig’s anthem, and Diane Martin kept the crowd jumping with Cee-Lo Green’s smash, “Forget You”. The Irish dancing on the night was of superb quality with Joanne Halpin, Aofie Mc Donald, Holly Halpin and Denise Mc Cooey wow-ing the crowd with a Treble Reel, and the McGinn sisters Catherine and Claire dancing to “Danzo Kudro” giving their performance a contempory twist. Tara Kennedy sang “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley in what was her 4th show in St. Aidans , each time proving to be a huge talent!
Although all the acts were amazing, there could be only one winner, and that was Dylan Byrd, a 1st year student, who, after suffering some backstage nerves, won both the crowd’s vote and the judges’, Ms. Angela Flanagan, Mrs Jean Vogan and Ms Linda Murphy. His upbeat hip-hop moves to Nikki Minaj’s “Superbass” won him the prize, with Nicola Reilly placing 2nd, and Calvin Mc Manus and Gareth O’Reilly coming 3rd with their amazing guitar based rendition of Ed Sheeran’s massive hit “A-Team”. The acts performed together one last time singing One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful”. All in all it was a super night showcasing the talent that stands in St. Aidan’s.
