St. Aidan's Spelling Competition
On 29th November Transition year 2 held a Spelling Competition for all the first year students. This fun activity was part of the Y.S.I. (Young Social Innovator) project on raising awareness of the importance of literacy and reading within the school. The week before the Competition the students were given a list of some of the words to learn in preparation for the Spellaton.
The event was a great success. The first years formed teams of four and the competition was high. In the end a high percentage were within touching distance of winning. The winners were, Chloe Boyle, Aoibh Brennan, Laura Delaney and Roisin Smith. In second place was Padraig Jackson, Colm Shalvey, James Lynch, and Rory Cassidy and just behind in third place was Claudia Horne, Margaret McCabe, Amy Drury and Glenda Middleton.
All groups put in a tremendous effort. The top three winners were given Certificates, merits and "Super Speller" pens and all participants were rewarded with a small treat from the tuck shop. The T.Y. students that organised the event put in plenty of work and were delighted to see it turn into such a success. Ms Benton was the Quiz master and we thank her for doing an excellent job and we thank Ms Hetherton for helping us to organise the event.
