Under 16 soccer report 09-10

The season kicked off with the first round of the Ulster Cup game against Virginia. At half time the Comprehensive were losing 1-0 but an excellent display in the second half saw the boys come out with a 2-1 victory. They received a bye in the second round and then faced a very strong St Macartan’s team for a place in the Ulster quarter final. The game ebbed and flowed with the Comprehensive team eventually coming out victorious 4-3 in extra time, in what was an extremely well contested game.
The boys were then drawn against St. Eunan’s in the quarter final. They are a notoriously difficult team to beat with a huge pedigree in both Ulster and All Ireland competitions. It was another fantastic match and the Comprehensive came from behind twice to level the match. They played extremely well in the last ten minutes and could have nicked it at the death. The game went to extra time with the comprehensive boys showing a great appetite for the battle. There was no score at the end of the first period. With the wind at their back they threw everything at he letterkenny lads and with a couple of minutes to go had the chance to take the game. The ball was floated in and Caolan Reilly poked it towards goal. Unfortunately the Eunan’s goalie dived bravely at his feet and the ball spun up and hit the crossbar. It was to be the last opportunity of the game. Penalties were the outcome never a good way to end such a cracking match and after the dust settled the boys had been beaten 5-4.
Even in the midst of their disappointment they shook hands with their opponents who recognised that they had had a lucky escape. St. Eunan’s played their semi final on Monday last and have advanced to the Ulster Final so we know that we have a very talented bunch of players. Every single player worked tremendously hard and they were a credit to their school, manager and parents. The boys will now contest the Cavan/Monaghan League over the coming weeks with a determination to succeed.

Extra-curricular Dance

St. Aidan’s is now availing of the ‘girls in action program’ funded by the HSE. The idea is to get girls more active during school time. Niamh Smith is now taking the girls for a dance class once a week during lunchtime. The girls will be performing dance such as ballet, hip hop, and contemporary.

Killinkere Cross Country Competitioncross country 09

well done to all students who took part in the cross country event in Killenkere on Wednesday last. The event took place in terrible conditions with continuous wind and rain. Despite the conditions it seemed to have little effect on the St. Aidan’s pupil’s performances, as a huge amount of silverware was won on the day... more

Under 16s win county

Saint Aidan’s Under 16s beat Breffni College with a score line of 6-5 (23) to 3-9 (18) to win the Under 16s county football. After beating Baileborough in a physical and tough semi-final, Saint Aidan’s raced out in the first half powering through Breffni College and led by 11 points at half time. Aaron Watson, Caolan Reilly and Declan Smith performed well up front with Stephen Donnary, Mark Murray and Cian McPhilips supporting admirably. However, in the second half Breffni came back drawing level and then a goal put them into the led with ten minutes remaining. Points by Stephen Donnary and Cian McPhilips drew Saint Aidan’s level again and well worked goal from Captain Damien O’Brien put Saint Aidan’s ahead before two more points one from Damien O’Brien and the other from Cian McPhilips sealed the victory.

Gaelic Football 2008

(Boys)-St Aidan’s U14, U16 and Senior Boys Gaelic footballers had a tremendous campaign and restored great price and honour in all their games played.  The highlight on Friday 5th December in Brefni Park Cavan saw the U14's and Seniors go down fighting in both County finals to Virginia V.S.  Either team could easily have won on the night but their can be no denying the great performances we witnessed./  Backed by great support from the school teachers and students and all local clubs St Aidan’s teams can be proud of contributing to the best vocational finals seen in years.  The u16’s narrowly missed out on reaching the County finals.  We can look forward with confidence and hope to lifting a cup within the near future on 2008 performances

March '08

First year students from St. Aidan’s went to Mullaghmeen Forest Park on First Year Students Orienteering Wednesday 5th March 2008 for an orienteering trip. The Cavan Army facilitated the adventure with the aid of teachers Ms. McMorrow, Mr. McCaul, Ms. Vogan and some senior students. The weather was ideal with blue skies. Students had a real back to basics day as they hiked through the forest going cross country at times and eating their packed lunches. An amazing day was had by all (teachers included) as we all challenged ourselves to complete the course whilst enjoying the tranquillity and beauty of the forest. The students had to navigate their way through the forest using maps and compasses thus acquiring and mastering the navigational skills. Well done to all for successfully completing the course.
