TY Physical Education Baseball Demonstration April 2016
Our TY’s were extremely lucky to be in the presence of a former Major League Baseball player; Simon Pond (Former Toronto Blue Jays) on Monday 25th April 2016. Simon was accompanied by Gary Pennington, a former Canadian baseball player, coach and PE teacher with over 60 years’ experience. Baseball in Ireland began in 1992. There are currently 500 registered players (incl. 200 youth players). There is an adult league of 13 teams nationally. As with any sport it is important to promote it to the next generation. The Cavan Comets will be running summer camps in June of this year for youth players and wanted to do a demonstration of what baseball is all about to our students. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, something new for many of them and some were particularly good at it with some small similarities between Baseball and Hurling/Camogie. The students learned all the basics of throwing, fielding and batting. A big thank you to Simon, Gary and Cavan Comets for the demonstration.
