Hurling All-Stars

On Thursday 15th, two of our Senior Hurlers, Jesse Holland and Diarmuid Carney, both from the Cootehill club, travelled with their coach Mr Greenan to Queens University Belfast for trials to be selected as an Ulster Colleges Hurling All Star.
The best 80 hurlers in Ulster are put forward by their schools, and they are split into four squads of 20 players. They play two matches against each other, and three independent judges from around Ulster decide on the best 40 players from these two games to go forward to a final trial. Both players played exceptionally well, not looking out of place with the best that Antrim, Down and Derry players on display. Diarmuids haul of 0-5, all from play earned him a call back for the final trial, and a place in the top 40 in Ulster.
The final trial took place on November 22nd, with another trial match featuring the top 40 players from Ulster taking place under lights in Queens University Belfast, and Diarmuid again showed he was capable of mixing it at the top level. He will now have an anxious wait to find out if he has been selected as one of the 15 All Stars for 2017.
Both players should be proud of their performances and for getting so far in the selection process, to make the top 80 and top 40 respectively out of over 1000 hurlers is a significant achievement.
