Brickx Lego Workshop
Clodagh Malone from Dundalk Brickx Club Came to St. Aidan’s Comprehensive School on Monday 12th November for workshops. The first workshop was with TY students; their challenge was to code their phone number into binary code using Lego. Afterwards they built many impressive structures and vehicles demonstrating their creative skills to build without following set instructions.
The second workshop challenged the first year students to produce a Lego model of their vision of Cootehill in the future. Creativity was key to the task with many existing premises from Abbots and Side Street Café being reproduced in Lego alongside a McDonalds and a runway for the airplanes.
Coding and Computer Science students from second and fifth year respectively learned about the ASCII binary codes for the alphabet with the challenge to reproduce words in ASCII code using Lego along with their phone number in binary and creating a structure without instructions. From NASA control to Empire State building to various vehicles the results exceeded all expectations.
Well done to all students who participated. Clodagh thoroughly relished her visit and was amazed at the high creative standards. She remarked on how positive, motivated and well behaved the students were. All students have the opportunity to expand on their Lego, maths and coding skills during lunchtime clubs in room 23 on Monday and Wednesday. It is never too late to get involved!
