TY Bake SaleMs Marren’s TY class took on a fundraising challenge with great gusto and hosted a Bake Sale for the Make A Wish foundation. They baked delicious brownies, cheesecakes, apple cakes, gluten free products, top hats, Austrian and German biscuits, cookies and sweets. Along with hot chocolate they sold these products in 3 different locations in the school in order to be Covid compliant. ......more

TY Tai Chi, Qigong and MeditationSt Aidan’s Comprehensive welcomed Tony McMahon into our school this week to introduce Tai Chi, Qigong and Meditation to our TY classes. Our students were encouraged to focus, reflect and channel their energy. The students learned valuable breathing exercises, meditation techniques and basic poses associated with Tai Chi and Qigong. NSMC Road Safety eventOn 23 January 2020 the Joint Secretariat hosted its sixth cross border Road Safety schools outreach event. Five schools from the Armagh area and four schools from the Monaghan/Cavan area were represented by 47 students. The event was run in co-operation with the local PSNI, Monaghan-based Gardaí Síochána and members of NI Fire and Rescue Service. The Assistant Commissioner David Sheahan attended along with Superintendent Longeran. The PSNI were represented by Superintendent Wendy Middleton.....more

Develop Me ProjectTransition Year has had a very successful start in St. Aidan’s. At the beginning of the term 80 students participated in an Induction programme which included a team building day in school with the ‘Develop Me’ project, delivered by Gerard O’Shea, David O’Shea and Owen O’Brien of ‘Develop Me’.
As per the Transition Year guidelines for schools, Transition Year “provides a bridge to help students make the transition from a highly-structured environment to one where they will take greater responsibility for their own learning and decision making”.....more TY Tea PartyWell done to TY1 for all their hard work organizing and hosting a tea party for the elderly in the school library. This event was part of their SVP Youth for Justice project and also the Well Read Programme which involved meeting up and socializing with elderly people from the Darley Centre. Lots of treats such as cakes, apple tarts and buns were made by the Home Economics students (Ms. Hetherton's class) for everyone to enjoy with a hot cup of tea. TY trip to AmsterdamOn the 12th of February the transition years went on a three-day trip abroad to Amsterdam accompanied by Mr. Sharpe, Mr. Greenan, Ms. Brady and Ms. English. It was an early start that morning as the bus was leaving the school at 2 am though nobody really seemed overly tired – we were all very excited and the bus was full of chatter the whole way to the airport. Once at the airport we got our tickets and were separated into four groups which we would stay in for roll call throughout the trip. Our flight was at 6.15 that morning which left us with a little under two hours to quickly get something to eat as we wouldn’t be eating again until later in the day. .....more
St. Aidans Comprehensive student wins prestigious National AwardOn the 24th November, Leah Boyle, L.C.A class of 2018, received the very prestigious National Fergal Quinn Award for achieving the highest number of credits in the Leaving Certificate Applied 2018.
The delightful ceremony took place at a special lunch in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone on Saturday November 24th 2018. On Monday 3rd September the Transition year group in St. Aidan’s Comprehensive School Cootehill went on a school trip to Tanagh Outdoor Education Centre. The purpose of this trip was to improve our team building skills and to get to know people that are not in our usual friend groups....more
B5 Fudge Task
Well done to the B5 students who recently made fudge for their Hotel Catering and Tourism Task. The students have been working hard on their written presentation and their chosen product, fudge. Each student made a different variety of fudge and neatly presented their product for examination. Well done to all, the results were fantastic!
Ty Trip To Poland 2018
This year we travelled to Poland for the annual T.Y. trip.
On Tuesday the 6th of February fifty-one students and our four brave teachers left Cootehill for Dublin Airport and our short flight to Krakow. For some of us it was our first time on a plane and for others it was our first time to travel without our families. TY2 recently completed their block in Home Economics. During the module the students explored different foods from various countries around the world. As part of their assessment the students were asked to pick a country of their choice and make a dish from that country. The students were very creative with their choices and prepared a variety of impressive dishes. ....more
TY Bake offTY1 students recently took part in a class bake off in Home Economics class. The students learned how to make a traditional sponge cake and decorated the cakes in their groups. The winners of the bake off were Ryan Brady, Alysia Carolan and Lucas Gioan. Well done!....more

Baking Workshop
On the 15th of November the B5 and A5 students took part in a bread making workshop. The students spent the morning preparing, proving and baking loaves of bread. The students also learned about the bread making process and the science involved in this process. A huge thank you to Dimitir from ‘My Strandhill Bakery’ for visiting us. The results were fantastic. TY Awards Night 2017The Transition Year class of 2017, their parents, families and teachers attended a graduation and awards ceremony on Thursday 18/05/17. During this evening, the students were recognised for their contribution to the school and to the TY programme. Displays of their work were presented in the hall and seven students spoke very eloquently on their experience of different aspects of TY – from subject sampling to work experience and sport. .....more
Mini-Marathon Bake SaleTransition year students have been working hard preparing lots of freshly baked goodies for a bake sale in aid of the Mini Marathon. TY1 students prepared a range of freshly baked products in class. Also, the girls taking part in the mini marathon prepared baked goods to sell in school. B5 French CuisineOur B5 class decided to cook a French themed dinner in our Hotel Tourism & Catering (HTC) class. We prepared the room with a French map, French cookery book, French flags and napkins in the French colours which are red, white and blue. We picked this theme because our class were interested in the French culture as part of Ethnic cookery. We cooked cantaloupe melon, cucumber salad, croissants, Quiche Lorraine, courgette and tomato bake, pear and almond tart, chocolate gateaux and cream slices. We really enjoyed the experience....more
B5 Trip to London
On the 15th March students from B5, Mrs (Mammy) Hanna and Mr. (absolute legend) Fitzsimons embarked on one of the most memorable school trips to London. Equipped with one of Lakeland dairys’ finest meal (Maaaail) bags, craic and the eager students of B5, we all headed off to London.
After a short plane flight, we ventured onto London’s underground train network where we were walked across and squeezed onto the carriage within an inch of our lives. On Wednesday 22nd of March TY2 students travelled to the TLT Theatre in Drogheda with our teacher Ms Flanagan for the regional Young Social Innovators speak-out. This event gives students the opportunity to take to the stage in front of four judges and other schools. Students had two minutes to show case the great work they have been doing over the year and to speak-out about their chosen social issue. .... more
TY Lip Sync
The roof was lifted from St. Aidan’s Comprehensive on Tuesday 14th of March when the Transition Year students took to the stage with their night of Lip-Sing battles. An idea taken from MTV’s hit show Lip-Sync, where celebrities mime and perform to hit music numbers.
Tying in with the 50th Celebrations of the opening of St. Aidan’s Comprehensive School this year, the show brought us back in time as the Transition Years battled their way up through the decades, taking on some of the most iconic performances and musicians of the different eras. ....more 5B5 Solas Hair Salon opens up to the student population
Students from B5 have opened up their salon this week for any student wishing to have an upstyle or variety of plaits. The salon was extremely busy on Monday the 13th and is fully booked for Tuesday the 14th February. B5 students have been learning how to complete a variety of upstyles and plaits over the last 6 weeks and have enjoyed every minute of it. A big thank you must go to Marie Langan, past pupil who has demonstrated these upstyles, plaits, washing, blow-drying and curling hair, which has helped our students to learn many new skills
Ty "Cook it " Programme
Well done to all Transition Year students who completed the Cook it Healthy eating programme over the academic year. The course is supported by the HSE and focuses on Healthy Eating and the food pyramid. Students gained a good overall knowledge of a healthy eating and got an opportunity to put this knowledge into practice in the Home Economics room. Each week students prepared an array of Healthy Dishes from each level of the food pyramid. Students have recently been awarded their certificates for completing this course.....more
TY Baseball Demonstration
Our TY’s were extremely lucky to be in the presence of a former Major League Baseball player; Simon Pond (Former Toronto Blue Jays) on Monday 25th April 2016. Simon was accompanied by Gary Pennington, a former Canadian baseball player, coach and PE teacher with over 60 years’ experience. Baseball in Ireland began in 1992. There are currently 500 registered players (incl. 200 youth players). There is an adult league of 13 teams nationally......more
TY Biology updateTY Biology Students entered the Reellifescience Video Competition at the start of the year. We had no winners but each group created wonderful videos and should be very proud of their efforts. Group one created a video on Incredible Life: The Characteristics of Life, Group Two created a very factual video on Evolution, Group three created a video on Marie Curie, detailing her life as a Heroine of Science and Group four looked at smart medical devices, telling the story of how glasses have developed over the years. TY Physical Education Peer Coaching ModuleAll TY Students were given the opportunity to receive training in coaching ‘games 4 all’ as part of inclusive physical education and peer coaching students with disabilities through their PE class. Book launch at Cootehill day care centreOn Wednesday 22nd April 2015 students in Ty1 from St Aidan’s Comprehensive School Cootehill hosted a Tea party for the senior Citizens in the Cootehill Day Care Centre. Ty Youth for JusticeOn 2nd May 2013 TY2 and TY3 students and their teachers Ms. Hetherton and Ms. Flanagan from St.Aidan’s participated in the Youth for Justice exhibition in the Nuremore Hotel Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan. The President of S.V.P welcomed everyone and explained that the aim of the programme was to harness the energy in young people so that they can work in the Community. Young people are the future volunteers for S.V.P. and it gives them an insight into the work that SVP are doing in communities across the country. He praised the students for all the creative and inspirational work they carried out throughout the year in their own locality. A guest speaker, Ms. Eimear Dolphin gave a very informative presentation on the mental health awareness and the importance of looking after your mental health....more
